"Man With A Candle", a painting by Godfried Schalken.

On the Nature of Light

And, if the soul is about to know itself, it must gaze into the soul.
–Plato, Alcibiades.

Have I ever seen you, Darkness, conscious within mine?
Have I ever roamed those dim & dreary roads of thine?
Have I been thou & thou—me?
Have we become what we may need to be?
I know not how you fill the emptiness in mine.
I feel not but thy cold scorching presence as a shrine.
So full of thou, I embrace you now, as we entwine
I see you plainly now; thou scare me not.
I’ve seen in all myself & in myself all.
I’ve seen me rise I’ve seen me fall.
I’ve seen the lot of my soul & in my soul a lot!
I’ve tasted all of my coherent contradictions,
All my temperaments,
All my sacraments,
All my intimidating addictions.
& I’ve hated them not;
The sinfulness of my impeccability.
The vainness of my ability.
The folly within my foresight.
The fragility of my might.
The pain within my pleasure.
The void within my treasure.
The sickness in my soundness.
The madness in my profoundness.
The sorrow within my delight.
The Darkness of my light…
I’ve tasted all & as they pass I savored each
Learning what each lesson need to teach
Only then could I see how much light darkness can confine.
Only then could I know the world outside & inside entwine.
& that, to only see what light might be
I gaze into that dark self of me,
To witness Darkness conscious within mine.

There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.

-C.G. Jung
