"Portrait of Maude Abrantes" by Amedeo Modigliani

Maude

You are not what you may seem.
Deep into this captive thought,
In the bleak of time, was brought,
Shadows despondent, distraught,
of a dark and distant dream.
You are not what you may seem,
Yet you know how much before,
Fought, I, at the heaven’s door,
Long to gaze at you once more,
Losing lifetimes for a gleam.
But you’re not what you may seem.
I have fought the fight and won.
Lost all my dearest — all but one;
Fickle flakes of a self — undone,
Fragments of my self-esteem.
& you’re not what you may seem.
Your promise “Through wax & wane”
left naught but my piercing pain,
tears; unintended — in vain;
Terrors pervading my dream.
For you’re not what you may seem.
Gazing at a lonely hollow hell,
A place, where you loved to dwell,
No more wish I all be well,
No more believe I — or deem,
That you are what you may seem.
Though unknowing and unknown;
Long I stood, lovelorn and lone,
Waiting to gaze, hark, & hone,
Lest you show and shift the theme.
Yet you’re not what you may seem.
You’re a dark & distant dream…
